Skincare + Makeup Favorites
My love for makeup and products goes back to the third grade when my parents caved (after much convincing) and gifted me with a Caboodles case full of makeup for my birthday. I remember sitting on the floor in my bedroom with my glittered purple case and spreading all it's contents across the floor and playing in all the colors for hours at a time.
Twenty years later, it's fair to say not much has changed – expect now I'm stationed at my vanity and I no longer cover myself in glitter. My skincare products have filtered in and out pretty often over the years but most of my makeup products have been key to my makeup look for years.
One thing that I try to find is products that serve multiple purposes (like the Swamp Queen eyeshadow and blush/bronzer palette and Supergoop everyday SPF that doubles as a moisturizer) – this keeps costs down and a more organized vanity area.
Dealing with acne-prone skin and finding the right skincare products can be daunting for sensitive skin. After years of trial and error, I have simplified my routine to just a few products that have worked wonders.
Here, my season-after-season staples and products that are working well for me at the moment.
A few cosmetic products to mention:
Laura Mercier bronzer in Warm Bronze – This is the Holy Grain of bronzers! I've used this product for many years and I've never tried anything that compares for the perfect glowing, contoured look that this one delivers. It has the prettiest shimmer and it doubles as a light highlighter.
NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Abu Dhabi – If there is lip color on my lips, there's a 90% chance it's this – it's a great color for a natural look: a tad sheen, matte, non-stick, and a steal for your wallet.
Tarte Swamp Queen eye/cheek palette – My favorite palette ever. Highly pigmented, so flattering on the skin, naturally beautiful warm shades. Applies smooth as butter and lasts all day.
A few skincare products to mention:
Eucerin Q10 Anti-Wrinkle Face Creme – I have seen a MAJOR difference from using this super moisturizing face creme – morning and night. This product is definitely for those with dry, sensitive skin because it's thicker than most. It keeps my skin hydrated and acne-free!
SkinMedica AHABHA Exfoliating Cleanser – A lot of exfoliators have really harsh components in them so this was a product that was worth the splurge for me to avoid all that. It's gentle but gives a good scrub and it doesn't dry my skin out. My complexion is clear and soft by the morning when I use this (once a week) and my pores appear smaller.
SkinCeuticals Epidermal Repair – I bought this at the recommendation of my esthetician and use it after chemical peels or an IPL. It makes my skin feel so smooth and insanely moisturized without feeling heavy.
*I purchase all my SkinCeuticals, SkinMedica and Revision products at Aesthetic & Laser Center. Mention my name and receive 20% off all products!
Products I've been using that are prescribed from my dermatologist: SulfaCleanse wash that I use morning and night after a gentle wash, Onextone topical treatment used to spot treat, and Spironolactone (oral medication). Most recently, my doctor added Adapalene 0.3% topical retinoid gel treatment to my routine – my skin is still so sensitive to retinol so I use it 2 or 3 times a week.
If you have dry skin, I would recommend the Eucerin moisturizer, a dewy face mist like this one by Tatcha.
If you have acne-prone skin and you're breaking out, first and foremost I would recommend visiting the dermatologist. That's going to be your most affordable, quickest way to figuring out what's going on with your skin. Ask your doctor for an antibiotic – I got on Doxycyclin to kill the acne-causing bacteria for 50 days before she switched me to the regular medicine.
Lastly, I ALWAYS wear SPF50! When I don't have much going on during the day I'll wear my SPF50 or SPF and a BB cream with additional SPF protection. So important to protect yourself from the sun, it preserves the collagen and elasticity in your skin and prevents dark spots.
It's seems like alot (because it is) but my skin is so uber sensitive that I'm just doing exactly what the doctor tells me!
